#330: The Dullards

“Some people you meet are so dull
that you always remember their names.”   –William Stafford

Are you uninteresting
or stupid? I love you.
You are like the black hole
photographed for the first
time in human history,
or an undiscovered country
from whose bourn blah blah
no traveler returns blah blah.
You fascinate, primarily because
you cannot read or be read.
You can’t help it.
That’s why I hold you in such
esteem. You’re not wasting your
gifts because you have no gifts.
You cannot NOT
be bland, your ordinariness
oozes from you, and you’re the
master of tedium,
so normal you’ve become
strange. You’re not trying
to stand out, rise above,
get noticed, get ahead,
or keep up. You just do
you and it’s stultifyingly dull.
Are you happy? I can only guess.
Are you thinking? I can only guess.
You are unfathomable, and, hard as
I may try, I can never forget your name.
