#570: Drum Lessons

Ringo Starr, one of the greatest
drummers in the world, has admitted
to not being able to do a double-stroke roll.

I’ve seen children in YouTube
videos who are better drummers than
I will ever be. I don’t like these drummers.

My son is a better rudimental
drummer than I will ever be. How come?
He worked a hundred times harder to achieve that.

I appreciate virtuosity, I do.
But some of my favorite drummers ever
are what I like to call meat and potatoes.

Some drummers that I don’t
like very much, who I think are mediocre,
played the drums in some of my favorite bands.

I took some lessons, but for
the most part, I played my drums
along to records and with other musicians.

In drumming, as in life,
it’s best to do what’s most needful.
What best serves the song: do that,

if you can.
