Because the band is named
after a literary person,
a fictional British detective,
and not a real person,
I’ve discovered I have misfiled
Sexton Blake in the B’s.
Needless to say, I did not listen
to this record from Sexton Blake
after finding the mistake,
and filed Plays the Hits,
a collection of 80’s cover
tunes, post-haste, under S
where it belongs.
Nevertheless, I was curious.
Why’d I even buy this album?
Beyond how formative the 80’s
were for me, I couldn’t tell you.
I didn’t know Sexton Blake
from Adam and I still don’t.
At first, after pulling
this record from the stacks,
when I thought Sexton Blake
was the name of a guy and
not the name of a band,
I googled the name and
learned some things: that
this is not a guy,
that the record should
be alphabetized under S,
and that the band leader,
Josh Hodges, is also in a more
famous band that used to be
called Starfucker, but now is just
called Strfkr, and finally, that Josh
Hodges, and the band Sexton Blake,
and the band Strfker, claim Portland,
Oregon as their home town.
I listened to a little bit of Strfkr
on my streaming service to find out
what they were like. They’re nice,
sweet, poppy, danceable, like
something from the 80’s.
They have a funny name.
I’ll move on tomorrow to
the next artist filed under B.
